AltavillaHistorica
Obiettivi
This site is born out of a common passion for local history and of the need to save from oblivion and apathy a heritage that risks disappearing. And here we wish to remember Angelo Caruso, overseer of the State Records Office of the Campania region, founder of the Local Library of Altavilla Irpina.
Adequate preconditions to the understanding of the reasons and the aims which made us create this venture and what our reference models are.
We wish to repeat again and inform our readers that we consider sources for our research not only written documents, which have their unique importance, but everything that can provide useful information for the reconstruction of the history of this territory, archive of deposited facts, which are necessary in order to understand a place, a name, a manufactured good, but also a way of thinking, or certain collective ways of feeling, of acting, and choices.
This assumption is the evidence that a territory thus considered becomes for us a varied source of information that can include a street , a photo, a video, a dish, a speech, a diary, memories, a biography, a stone, an ex-voto.
It is as if we were collectors or secondhand dealers who, driven by strong desire, put together so many pieces that don’t seem to have much in common, while, on the contrary, have many ties that bind them together. All this becomes a living whole, made up of witnesses and memories and since they belong to us we wish to do something in order to save them from being forgotten.
Goals ( finalità )
The goals we have set are basically two – to do something to stem the tide of ignorance and disinterest towards our historical heritage, and to offer the opportunities and means so that each of us can find our own history. In the meantime, this is what we wish to achieve:
Make the public understand the benefit of making use of many sources in order to read the territory.
Encourage research and promote the exchange of information.
Use new technology so that the knowledge of local history may allow an easy approach for the younger generations, usually unaware heirs of a common identity that comes from afar.
Give life to an ideal research laboratory that can contribute, especially among those very interested, to acquiring a training that goes beyond “local scholarly gossip”.
Correctly use research methods which restore dignity to local historical research, so as to contribute to a better understanding of facts, events and broader and more complex dynamics belonging to general history.
Be a reference point in order that “idiocies, which become tradition and are then hard to eradicate, will not be written in history books” (A. Caruso).
Offer local institutions an important contribution to the consideration and appreciation of our historical, artistic and cultural heritage.
Enhance in the Altavillans across the world the awareness of a common origin and the need to keep and build a memory of the community.
Throw light even on the dark sides of local history because ennobling its memory drives us to distort the truth or emphasize the past, while neglecting its memory limits historical consciousness.

How can I do a search and verify that the material is present in altavillahistorica?
Easy, just use the search engine. First, you must make a choice that directs the research to a selection of the information. In other words, where you see search (cerca) click on “vai” (go). At this point choose one ofthe options suggested, that is: all words (tutte le parole), any word (qualsiasi parola) or exact sentence (frase esatta) (to the left of the screen). After doing this, key in the topic or the author that interests you and this will now become the keyword.
Another way, which requires more time, however, is to scroll down (on the left, where you see vita civile or vita religiosa) the categories. Each category contains a certain number of documents, which will increase over time; the more help we receive, the more documents we can provide.
Must I pay something in order to publish a piece of writing?
No, altavillahistorica is non profit. A sponsor willing to give us a hand can do so by taking up some expenses such as paying the photocopy shop to computerize a book or other things. If you wish to do so, contact us and we will provide you the material you will need to have it computerized.
How must I proceed for altavillahistorica to publish my paper?
For a research paper to be published on altavillahistorica, it must follow the rules of a good essay, contain something new, and, last but not least, quote the sources or the bibliography used. Generally there are no limits concerning the number of pages. In any case, better not to exaggerate.
What happens if what I sent is not published?
The following are the reasons your information may not have been published. First, it might be published over time. Second, it may not have met the editorial requirements of altavillahistorica. In any case you will receive notice. You must know that material sent is not returned, unless otherwise arranged.
Do I need permission to publish my work or that of others (dissertation, books) as an e-book?
Yes, but only if of interest for local history, in its broader meaning. Written works by local personalities that have held office or important positions or have a strong link to the community and memory of Altavilla can be published as e-books. Examples are Federico Capone and his writings as member of parliament or as a pioneer of flight, the memoirs of F. Orlando, exiled in Turkey; general C. Caruso and his memoirs on his colonial campaigns in Africa or A. Caruso and his historical works. In cases like these we think it is useful that people get to know their published writings.
May I submit the biography of a relative or an acquaintance so it can be published?
Yes, but only if it is a historical personality or someone not living who held important offices or positions or has been distinguished for his humane or moral qualities, for his artistic or scientific merits, for civil commitment or courageous deeds. Without these requirements, altavillahistorica would contain an endless number of obituaries. We wish to distinguish ourselves from others.
If I send a picture or a video will it be automatically posted?
No, only if it is of common interest. In addition, the quality of the images must be on a good level and you must assume full responsibility regarding possible limits on right of use or on preemption of pictures or videos (copyright, trademarks, protection of personal details).
If I have a complaint or some news on our historical heritage, may I ask them to be published on altavillahistorica?
Yes, you can do so on the forum (not yet operating), respecting the rules and above all if the news is not detrimental to others.
